•Improved hinged beam specimens were designed and manufactured.•The failure modes of different interfaces of the specimen under bending-shear load were discussed.•The force mechanism of the interface between CFRPG-ECC and concrete was studied.•An analytical model was established to estimate the interfacial bearing capacity.
