Formulation of environmentally robust flame-retardant and superhydrophobic coatings for wood materials

•The coating can endow wood materials with high flame-retardancy and self-cleaning performances.•The coating can endure different harsh environmental conditions without losing superhydrophobicity or flame-retardancy.•The flame-retardant performance of the treated wood is maintained even after being immersed in water for 24 h.
