The use of fibres in asphalt mixtures: A state of the art review

•The effects of natural and synthetic fibres in asphalt mixtures are reviewed.•Fibres from waste and by-products show the great potential of replacing conventional fibres in asphalt pavement.•Two important variables (the mixing process of adding fibres and their size) that affect the use of fibres are described.•Micro or nano characterization and simulation modelling help to understand the fibre-reinforcing mechanism in asphalt.•The effects of using fibres combined with other materials are summarized.
