Assessing geographic disparities in mental health research participation

•This analysis evaluated the rurality of research participants over a 5-year period.•There were 182 research participants and 1864 potential participants.•Participants and potential participants were overwhelmingly from urban areas.•Only one research participant was from the rural south.•Rural residents were disproportionately less likely to participate in research.
