•Noble metal Free Z-scheme driven CNTs/Bi2S3-WO3 nanohybrid catalysts were synthesized.•Physico-chemical and catalytic properties of hybrid catalysts were studied.•Hybrid catalysts showed excellent catalytic activity under solar irradiation.•Optimized catalysts show highest hydrogen production of 13.46 mmol h−1. g-1cat..•Hybrid catalysts have potential in environmental and energy applications.
