•A TiN@LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 cathode is fabricated via plasma-assisted sputtering route.•TiN coatings improve rate capability and reversible capacity of LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2.•The TiN coating delivers an artificially stable CEI during (de)lithiation processes.•NCM811-TiN/graphite pouch cell delivers capacity of 17.5 mAh over 200 cycles at 1C.
