Fundamental kinetic constants for breakthrough of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances at varying empty bed contact times: Theoretical analysis and pilot scale demonstration

•Common breakthrough models were used to calculate fundamental treatment parameters.•PFAS breakthrough curves at different EBCTs evaluated for fundamental parameters.•Order-of-magnitude agreement was observed among all three fundamental parameters.•Fundamental parameters provided insight into solute properties.•Fundamental parameters also allow for models to be used in predictive application.
