•In our real-world patient population.•we see a comparable median OS and toxicity as reported in large randomized controlled trials.•multivariate analysis showed that sequence of treatment (concurrent versus sequential) lost significance after correction for age, comorbidities, and stage.•the current TNM8 does well reflect the prognosis of unresectable stage III tumors.•only 42% of the patients with cCRT would have been eligible for the PACIFIC trial.
