•The chemical and enzymatic preparation of GlcN and NAG from chitin were discussed.•The general derivatizations of GlcN and NAG were summarized.•GlcN and NAG are green and renewable raw materials for the development of novel, efficient and safe pharmaceuticals, and functional chemicals.
