•Seabream and seabass production has grown steadily over the last decades.•LCA studies about seabass and seabream farming in the Mediterranean area were reviewed.•Mass-based functional unit and from-cradle-to-farm-gate boundaries were always selected.•There is lack of transparency regarding inventory data and processes included in the boundary.•Feed Conversion Ratio is the parameter most influencing the environmental performance.
