•One-step grafting-crosslinking fabrication of novel PVDF/PEI adsorption membrane.•Removal of Hg(II) with excellent adsorption capacity in wastewater.•Chemical chelation and redox action were involved in the adsorption process.•Hg(II) was reduced to low toxic Hg2Cl2 and generated crystal with a regular shape.
