Evolution and Advances in Wet Age-Related Macular Degeneration Treatments

Age-related macular degeneration is a leading cause of vision loss worldwide. Although this is currently an irreversible condition, a growing pool of treatment options exists, particularly when neovascularization occurs. The gold standard of treatment for neovascular macular degeneration is anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy, which has drastically improved the prognosis for those affected. However, this treatment comes with several barriers. Many new therapeutic approaches are being investigated, aimed at targeting different pathways involved in the pathogenesis of macular degeneration and improving patient compliance with treatment.
