•An impartial comparative investigation of NOx synthesis by spark and DBD was presented.•The mechanism of efficient pathways for NOx synthesis was explored.•The main factors for higher product selectivity are described and controlled.•Tuning the residence time greatly improved the selectivity with higher efficiency.
