•P-doped biochar (PBC) with C3-P-O was synthesized by a one-step method.•PBC exhibited superior adsorption capacity (148.62 mg g−1) for sulfamethoxazole.•The dynamic adsorption was well predicted by Thomas, Yoon-Nelson and BDST models.•C3-P-O contributed most to sulfamethoxazole removal through hydrogen-bond.
