•In upward social comparisons, evaluations of the mother and brain activity did not differ from the self.•In downward social comparisons, positive social judgments were made about mothers, accompanied by greater activity of the left temporal lobe.•For Chinese participants, the mother was stablyincorporated into the self and has greater importance than the self.
