•A novel near-infrared ratio detection platform HPQD was designed for monitoring ONOO− level fluctuations.•HPQD was capable of imaging exogenous and endogenous ONOO− in A549 cells.•HPQD was successfully applied to monitor the level changes of ONOO− in ferroptosis and mice model of LPS-induced inflammation.
