•Preparation of CuxMg3AlOy mixed-metal oxides derived from CuMgAl-LDHs.•High activity of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over CuxMg3AlOy without H2 pre-treatment.•Surface CuOx species can be reduced in situ to Cu0 species during the reaction.•Cu0 and Cu+ contribute to H2 activation and adsorption of furfural, respectively.•Synergistic effect of surface Cu0 and Cu+ species on promoting hydrogenation reaction.
