Lipocalin-2 production by astrocytes in response to high concentrations of glutamate

•Lipocalin-2 is upregulated in high glutamate-stimulated astrocyte enriched cultures.•Metabotropic glutamate receptor 3 in astrocytes is involved in the increase of Lcn2.•Lcn2 expression is increased in murine astrocytes after pilocarpine-induced seizure.•Lcn2 expression is increased in human cerebrospinal fluid after status epilepticus.
