•AUD show hypoactivation in the mesolimbic pathway and hyperactivation in the default mode network in gain‐loss processing.•AUD patients exhibit reduced activation in the prefrontal and cingulate cortices during risky decision‐making.•AUD presented dissociable neural response during two processes that lent support to incentive sensitization theory.•The findings provide a deeper understanding of the breadth of motivational reward function in AUD patients.
