Biochemical and gene expression differences associated with higher fat deposition in Krškopolje pigs in comparison with lean hybrid pigs

•Gene expression in relation to adiposity (breed and sex effect) was studied.•Lipogenic activities in subcutaneous fat were lower in Krškopolje than in lean pigs.•In backfat, Krškopolje had more saturated and monounsaturated fats than lean pigs.•Genes involved in lipogenesis were upregulated in fatty Krškopolje compared to lean pigs.•Females exhibited greater lipogenic activity than castrates of Krškopolje pig.
