•Perceptions and attitudes were used to understand urban human-wildlife conflicts.•Systematic review showed geographic and taxonomic bias in study areas.•Lack of longitudinal research excluded the probability to compare conflicts over years.•Research gaps and future opportunities along with inclusion of stakeholders were discussed.•Future research should expand beyond the analysis of single species at local level.
