Indentation modelling of aluminium cladding panels subjected to hailstone impact

•A new analytical model for predicting indentation into a cladding panel is presented.•Indentation profiles of the damaged panels were captured by an optical 3D scanner.•Model was derived by generalising indentation profile combined with plate theories.•Strain rate effect has been incorporated in the model development.•Accuracy is validated by experiments using a gas gun to launch ice onto the panel.
