Effects of prestress implementation on self-stress state in large-scale tensegrity structure

•A large-scale cylindrical tensegrity structure has been experimentally investigated.•Different prestress and support condition scenarios were applied.•Cable-by-cable prestress implementation led to a continuous stress redistribution.•Prestressing single cables had only a local effect.•Small joint angle restrictions and small joint friction had a significant effect.
