•Performed process simulations of different biomass co-firing options with CCS.•Constructed life cycle environmental assessment models of different CBECCS systems.•CBECCS systems can abate GHG emission intensity but will lead to EB shifts.•Indicator GWPUEL can reveal the tradeoffs between exergy loss and GHG reduction.•300 MW BGCPC-CCS scheme was identified as the most urgent retrofitting option.
