•The applicability of the NDVI-NSSI and EVI-NSSI is discussed.•Morphological changes of the feature spaces considering shade are illustrated.•Differences in estimates of fNPV, fPV, and fBS and the accuracy are determined.•Estimation for a wider range of NPV cover can be realized with the two models.
