Production of renewable aviation fuel from microalgae

Renewable aviation fuel is considered the most promissory option to drive the aviation sector toward sustainability. Such aviation biofuel can be produced from any type of biomass, through several conversion pathways. Among all the raw materials that have been studied for the production of this biofuel, the microalgae stand out, due to their high biomass productivity that is reached in the order of days, without the requirement of fertile soils. Despite these advantages, the production of renewable aviation fuel from microalgae has not been spread widely around the world. Therefore, in this chapter the state of the art of the production of renewable aviation fuel from microalgae will be presented. In addition, the disruptive technology that potentially enables large-scale production of microalgae-based aviation biofuels will be discussed.
