•Experiment assessing the consequences of actively participating versus listening in to a conversation.•Listening in results in stronger performance on a socio-perceptual and affective measure of Theory of Mind/mentalizing.•Converging results to existing evidence that mentalizing breeds mentalizing.•Insights about possible reasons why people who typically find themselves in listening in roles (e.g., women) may develop stronger Theory of Mind.
