Spectral decomposition and evolution equations

The spectral decomposition of the Laplacian with suitable boundary conditions gives us precise information about the solvability of the equation $$\displaystyle \begin{aligned} \lambda u - \varDelta u = f . \end{aligned} $$ But it also yields a method for proving the well-posedness of what are known as evolution equations.
