Overweight and obesity, a major global epidemic, has reached a particularly alarming level in Saudi Arabia, with more than half of the adult population overweight and one out of five obese. Overweight and obesity together constitute both a disease and a biological risk factor linked to numerous noncommunicable diseases (NCDs). In addition to the health burden, obesity comes with a large economic toll on society, through its impact on human capital and healthcare. While the causes of overweight and obesity remain complex and numerous, several emerging innovative and multisectoral evidence-based interventions aim to address the main behavioral risk factors of obesity, such as unhealthy diets and inadequate physical activity. Saudi Arabia has already embarked on the design and implementation of several such interventions and seeks to further expand and scale up such efforts to meet national goals.
