The Relationships Between Materialism, Benevolent Sexism, and Body Shame in South Korean College Women: The Mediating Effects of Internalization, Body-Surveillance, and Face-Surveillance

On the basis of Objectification Theory, the present study examined the mediating effects of internalization of beauty ideals, body surveillance, face surveillance in the relationships between materialism, benevolent sexism and body shame. A total of 472 female college students from various universities located in South Korea participated in this study. Results from structural equation modeling analysis indicated that the measurement model yielded evidence of good fit. Bootstrap methods were used to estimate the magnitude of indirect effects. As a result, materialism directly influenced internalization, body-surveillance and face-surveillance. The link between materialism and body shame was mediated by internalization and face-surveillance. Furthermore, benevolent sexism directly influenced internalization, face-surveillance and body shame. The link between benevolent sexism and body shame was mediated by internalization and face-surveillance. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
