Abstract We take an in-depth look at the widespread benefits of the best of leadership (primarily focusing on transformational leadership), and the equally extensive costs of bad leadership (such as abusive supervision and passive management). We also investigate how both good and bad leadership exert their effects, noting that any effects are invariably indirect and delayed. The chapter includes an in-depth discussion of gender and leadership, including a discussion of research suggesting that female leaders were more effective during the pandemic, and why this was the case. This chapter also discusses leadership behaviors that are most effective during and after crises.
