摘要
Abstract This chapter outlines the basic principles of phonetics. Three parameters—manner of articulation, place of articulation, and phonation—capture the articulatory characteristics of consonants. Three others—tongue height, backness, and lip rounding—describe vowels. The chapter illustrates how each consonant and vowel’s specific articulatory pattern potentially influences neighboring sounds. These articulatory parameters help provide a rationale for allomorphy.
