摘要
Syncope, defined as a period of transient loss of consciousness due to cerebral hypoperfusion, is very common among the general population and accounts for over 1% of hospital admissions. The most common causes of syncope across all age groups are neurally mediated syncope (NMS) or autonomically mediated syncope (AMS), also known as reflex syncope. The key to diagnosing NMS/AMS is an excellent history and physical exam, but several other investigations can sometimes aid in the diagnosis. NMS/AMS usually has a benign course, and most patients do not experience recurrent events. However, some patients can be very symptomatic, and this can even lead to injuries and negatively affect quality of life. Management strategies for these patients include nonpharmacologic measures, medications, and permanent cardiac pacing.
