Adaptation of genetically modified crops in Pakistan

Pakistan is a country with rapidly growing population, and needs all out efforts to feed the population. At least three research systems at federal, provincial, and private level run simultaneously for crop production, protection, and yield improvements. Development and commercialization of genetically modified (GM) crops has emerged as an essential technology in both the developed and developing world. GM crops started knocking at us in early 2000s, soon after that biosafety rules and guidelines were developed, though unregulated cultivation of GM cotton was already started in the country. Through this review we have analyzed the evolution and current status of GM crops in the country. Additionally the role played by the governmental agencies in accepting, rejecting, and regulations of GM seed is analyzed.
