Electrochemical membrane reactors

In this chapter, an overview of some electrochemical membrane reactors of great practical interest for the chemical industry and the energy transition is provided. First, the different types of electrochemical reactors are categorized from general thermochemical considerations. The general features of electrochemical membrane reactors are summarized. The diaphragms used with liquid electrolytes are described. Ion-conducting polymer electrolytes used either directly or soaked in electrolytes are also described. solid oxides used as electrolytes and cell separators are discussed. A few selected endergonic electrochemical processes of industrial interest (water electrolysis, brine electrolysis, and electrodialysis) are discussed. Processes are described, and the limitations of current materials are analyzed together and some prospective issues are addressed.
