Discourse Studies

AbstractSince the end of the 1990s, organizational theories (OTs) have taken a linguistic turn. By seeing organizations as discursive constructions, OTs scholars have provided the field with meaningful contributions aiming at renewing our comprehension of the contextual and pluralistic nature of organizing. Encompassing a broad range of approaches and disciplines, discourse studies seek to highlight the production, distribution and appropriation of texts in organizational settings. The chapter maps the main research streams of discourse studies, namely narrative analysis, communicative constitution of organizations, discourse analysis, and critical discourse analysis. Finally, it explores the pros and cons of discourse studies and discusses the relationships between discourse and materiality.
