•Halogen-free IL-based catanionic surfactants were synthesized.•Medium chain catanionic surfactant showed excellent interfacial activity.•Catanionic surfactants revealed low adsorption tendency on dolomite surface.•Direct relationship between work of adhesion and adsorption density was observed.
