•Acid pretreatment removed or passivated AAEMs in Pteris vittate L. (PV).•HCl-pretreated PV lost and leached more As, U, Pb, Mn, and Zn.•H3PO4-pretreated PV retained As, Cd, and Pb with low leaching concentration.•TGA-IST-FTIR-GC/MS system revealed emission, composition, relative yields, and volatiles.•Operational settings were jointly optimized via artificial intelligence.
