•A time series segmentation method (APCA) was presented for extracting stable rock-machine interaction data.•A novel deep clustering model (SSAE-FCM) focus on operational parameters was proposed.•A surrounding rock classification suitable for TBM was obtained.•The superiority of the proposed method and the importance of the selected features were discussed.
