Community strength-based interventions

We describe community strength-based interventions, explore the context and environment in which these programs exist, review examples of parent- or parenting-focused, child-focused, and family-focused community strength-based interventions, and conclude with some best practices. As with the other entries in this encyclopedia, we review these interventions through the lens of the Biopsychosocial Model (Engel, 1977). The Biopsychosocial Model demonstrates the multifaceted and reciprocal nature of health and, thus, serves as a useful framework for conceptualizing the role of neighborhood intervention and prevention programs designed to prevent negative outcomes (e.g., child abuse and neglect) and promote child and adolescent health and wellbeing.
