•Grinding with CB showed better flotation performance of chalcopyrite than with CIB.•The FeOOH formed on the grinding process inhibited chalcopyrite flotation kinetics.•The more FeOOH were formed when grinding with CIB than with CB.•Classical first-order model was considered the best model for CB grinding system.
