Future prospects and industrial outlook of syngas applications

Syngas is a versatile fuel that may generate critical chemicals for economic development, such as ammonia and methanol. Additionally, it can produce electricity and heat. The conventional processes for syngas production are partial oxidation (POX), steam reforming (SRM), dry reforming, and a combination of POX and SRM. Fossil fuels primarily power these processes. However, nonrenewable resources have exacerbated environmental problems. In this regard, this book chapter discusses the industrial outlook of syngas applications in terms of biomass gasification, considering the main aspects that can influence the syngas yield and quality, namely gasifier type, biomass type, and operational conditions. Furthermore, the future prospects of syngas production are discussed.
