Modeling, simulation, and optimization of methane production processes

Methane production processes have a remarkable potential to improve energy security and the sustainability of natural gas supply in the globe. The design and optimization of these processes require the knowledge of a wide variety of subjects, from chemical kinetics to wastewater treatment, and modeling techniques. This chapter aims to provide a brief summary of the theoretical fundamentals and applications of numerical modeling, simulation, and optimization of methane production processes. An overview of the substitute natural gas routes, methanation, and anaerobic digestion is followed by an in-depth look to each alternative. Several examples of how the design variables impact on the conversion efficiency, technical limitations, and production costs are discussed to provide the basis for engineering and research of methane production.
