MRI defecography

Pelvic floor dysfunction is a multifactorial and complex problem that is associated with a wide range of symptoms, such as urinary or fecal incontinence, chronic constipation, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, and organ prolapse. Patients seek care from a variety of subspecialties, ranging from gastroenterology and urogynecology to colorectal surgery. A combination of comprehensive clinical, physiological, and radiological investigations is required to accurately diagnose pelvic floor dysfunction. Over the last decade, magnetic resonance defecography (MRD) has evolved and become the preferred method of assessing pelvic floor dysfunction. This chapter provides a complete overview of MRD and its role in evaluating pelvic floor dysfunction. It also outlines helpful guidelines to establish and sustain a new MRD service.
