Design Considerations

When credited with high power density, fast charge/discharge rate, and long stability cycles, the supercapacitor, also called ultracapacitor, is considered promising emerging energy storage. They need to be constructed at low cost and respond rapidly to large-scale production and instantaneous charging/discharging of their electrical load. In this context, researchers are stimulated to design and fabricate cells, considering various parameters, including the electrode/electrolyte materials, voltage, temperature, etc. This chapter briefly discusses prospects and criteria of design, manufacturing, and operational techniques to produce supercapacitors of very high capacitance and energy density storage, which could outperform advanced batteries available commercially today.
