Hemodynamic Analysis of Cardiomems: Adverse Hemodynamic Effects

CardioMEMS is a renowned and representative MEMS sensor for medical uses, while its long-term safety after implantation is still unclear. This work has studied the hemodynamic changes caused by CardioMEMS sensors. Both simulation and experimental results have shown that the CardioMEMS sensor disturbs local hemodynamics of vasculature with strong correlation to the implantation angles, and have suggested that implantation of such a MEMS sensor could cause atherosclerosis. A streamlined profile is proposed to relieve the adverse effects. This study provides a design guideline for MEMS endovascular sensors with hemodynamic consideration, which is of clinical significance to medical devices.
