Abstract This chapter introduces the fundamental scientific principles at the core of nanoscience, showing nanotechnology as something new, exciting, and different. It begins by defining what is meant by the terms nanotechnology and nanoscience. Nanotechnology and nanoscience dwell on size-dependent change, elaborating how changing the size of an object at the atomic, molecular, or macromolecular scale can radically change its properties. The field of nanotechnology owes much of its origins to the invention of new ultrahigh resolution microscopes, capable of resolving individual atoms and molecules but involving no optics at all. The chapter highlights remarkable instruments that are central to mapping and manipulating matter at the atomic and (sub)molecular levels.
