Gender equity and motivational readiness for computational thinking in early childhood

•Motivation for computer science sets the stage for learning computational thinking.•There were no gender differences in computer science motivation among children in Grades 1-3.•Children endorsed stereotypes about computer science that favored their own gender.•Individual children's ingroup stereotypes were positively correlated with their own motivation.
