Optical Analysis for Improving the Photo Therapy Effect of LED Oral Care Devices

The advantages of using LEDs for oral treatment include the provision of various wavelengths and ability to treat hard-to-reach areas. The irradiation amount can be accurately controlled, and the penetration depth can be adjusted according to the desired wavelength range. However, current oral devices for whitening only cover a limited area of the anterior region or the pars lateralis, and do not offer comprehensive coverage of the entire oral cavity. In this study, these limitations are addressed by introducing three types of LEDs that exhibit antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and prophylactic effects and can cover all areas of the oral cavity. To design the LED system, adult maxillary and maxillary arch models are obtained, and a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB) is developed to fit the arch. LEDs are then mounted onto the FPCB, and light uniformity and irradiance are analyzed based on the LED arrangement and distance. The optimal duty ratio for irradiance and one-time use is calculated to reduce tooth sensitivity and prolong the lifespan of the LED system.
