•Mixture model without interfacial reconstruction is adopted and validated.•Computational time of VOF model is about 6.6 to 8.4 times of Mixture model.•A complex case of MMC with a hotspot heat flux of 800 W/cm2 was studied.•Maldistributions of mass flux, wall temperature and vapor void fraction are observed.
